"Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill it teaches the whole people by its example.
Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself."

A mother and grandmother were shot and killed in an Oildale home Saturday in what deputies are calling a domestic dispute.

Deputies were summoned by a 2:25 a.m. call from an 8-year-old girl in the home, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Department.

They arrived at a home in the 200 block of South Plymouth Avenue to find Suzan Annette Sowders-Fuller, 45, and Sharon Sue Cannon, 69, had been shot and had died, according to a news release from the coroner's office.

Deputies found out from the 8-year-old and a 5-year-old girl in the home that the suspect was their father, who fled, according to a sheriff's news release.

"There appears to have been some sort of domestic dispute taking place," Lt. J.R. Rodriguez said.

Deputies later found and arrested Robert Dale Fuller, 56, and booked him into the Central Receiving Facility. He faces two murder charges.

Sowders-Fuller is the spouse or former spouse of Fuller, and Cannon is her mother, Rodriguez said.

The girls at the home were not physically harmed. Rodriguez could not say where the children were taken after the shooting.

Saturday afternoon investigators were still at the home, where a driveway leading to it was blocked by sheriff's crime scene tape.

"She is a very super nice woman," Larry Minyard Jr., 44, who was working nearby, said of Sowders-Fuller. He added there were "about 20 people here earlier who loved her."

Rodriguez urged that anyone experiencing domestic violence or abuse seek professional help, such as through the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault.

"This is a real sad situation," Rodriguez said.

Autopsies are scheduled for Monday.
